9 SECRETS ABOUT FLEAS THAT OTHER PEST CONTROL COMPANIES DON'T WANT YOU TO KNOW!!

Updated: Dec 1, 2022

9 secrets about fleas the pros don't want you to know!!

1. IS IT JUST THE PET???

Sometimes it's not just the cat/dog who has fleas. There is a point in an infestation where the whole house, and all the mammals in it, become a 'Host Animal' for fleas.

This means treating only the pet is pointless as cat fleas will happily feed on humans/dogs as well as cats!!!

2. IS THAT EXPENSIVE PRODUCT THE RIGHT EXPENSIVE PRODUCT?

It may say KILLS FLEAS on the can, but how long does it kill them for? There is little to no point in just killing adult fleas, it is all about breaking the life cycle. This is why professionals use a residual insecticide. This means that it's killing power carries on for weeks, killing the new fleas as they hatch out.

3. DOES IT CONTAIN AN I.G.R.?

For a successful treatment we would always insist that our insecticide is combined with an I.G.R. This Insect Growth Regulator is a special chemical that makes any new eggs laid by the fleas not function properly and not hatch out.

4. VACUUMING TOO SOON???

If using a 'residual' insecticide, make sure that you leave it for a minimum of 3 weeks before getting the vacuum cleaner out!

There is no insecticide (even pro) that will kill the fleas eggs or pupa, these take 3 weeks to hatch out. If you vacuum before the 3 weeks you will be vacuuming the insecticide up, and the newly hatched fleas will start their life cycle all over again.

5. NOT VACUUMING ENOUGH???

Prior to treatment it is very, very important to vacuum the entire property extremely thoroughly. This has two purposes, it sucks up fleas, pupa, eggs and larvae, but it also removes dust and debris. Dust stops insecticides working efficiently.

6. EMPTY THAT BAG!!!

Always make sure that, after vacuuming, you empty the vacuum into an outside bin, in a sealed bag. If you don't do this, the adult fleas will slowly make their way back out of the vacuum and into your home!

7. THAT'S SPOT ON.

Do your cats and dogs have an up to date 'Spot On' flea treatment applied to them? It is very important they do, but please be careful not to overdose your pets, always refer to manufacturers instructions.

8. IS YOUR SPOT ON REPELLING?

Be careful that your pet's flea treatment is one that kills fleas, not one that just repels them!

9. MAKE YOUR BED!!!

Always wash dogs/cats bedding at 60 degrees or above, and tumble dry on a high heat, if possible. Bedding will be full of eggs, larvae, adults, so kill them with high temperatures, or maybe, treat your pets to new bedding and throw the old bedding away. Remember to bag old bedding up before disposing of in an outside bin.

9a. THE TRUTH IS...

The above list of insider tips is a great place to start your flea free life. Even with our helpful list, sometimes you will need a professional company doing a professional treatment using a professional product.
